HSE is an intelligent approach for re-education of the neuromuscular system through improved sensory awareness. HSE was developed by Thomas Hanna and he believed that human beings are ultimately self-sensing, self-monitoring, and self-changing. Hanna theorized the body's sensory-motor system responds to the stresses and traumas of daily life with specific reflex patterns that are no longer under voluntary, conscious control creating habituated muscular contractions. The three reflex patterns are called the Landau (Green Light) reflex, Startle (Red Light) reflex, and Trauma reflex. These habituated contractions cause fatigue, pain, stiffness, and soreness. Over time, the individual losses the ability to feel and control these muscles leading to a term Hanna called sensory-motor amnesia (SMA). By increasing your ability to sense and move your body from an internal perspective, your brain reorganizes the way you move and feel, restoring intelligent movement, correcting muscular imbalances and postural distortion patterns. This internal sensing of your self is called a “first person” experience.
