What is SMA? PDF Print E-mail
Sensory-motor amnesia (SMA) is a term that Thomas Hanna defined in his book Somatics: Reawakening the Mind’s Control of Movement, Flexibility, and Health. SMA is when muscles become habitually tight or contracted and is no longer under voluntary control. The brain loses its internal ability to sense or experience the muscles in your body. This is a learned process that may have resulted from an injury, surgery, faulty body mechanics, emotional stress, or just the passage of time. The good thing is SMA is reversible.
